Abstrakt     Endoscopic ultrasonography with its unique combination of endoscopic and ultrasonic imaging capabilities has much to offer in the management of portal hypertension and esophageal or gastric variceal bleeding. To the metods traditionally used for this purpose such as endoscopy, transabdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography, angiography, and magnetic resonance, endosonography has been recently added as a minimally invasive and sensitive technique. By detecting early changes in the portal vein blood flow and increased blood flow in the collateral vessels including splenic vein, venous plexus surrounding the lower esophagus, and proximal stomach, endoscopic ultrasound may be able to diagnose early portal hypertension. Endosonography can visualize portal branches, esophageal, gastric and rectal varices, and small ascitic effusion that other diagnostic methods may miss.
