Abstrakt     In the article the findings about the changes in chemistry instmction in the reformed nineyear primary schools are presented which were formed as the result of formal monitoring of the reformed curriculum implementation in the period between 2000 and 2002. In accordance with the gradual implementation of reform policy, only 17 primary schools were included in the first stage, and are thus included in the present study. It has been found out that the chemistry instmction in reformed programmes has improved a lot as regards the planing of instmction, the use of a variety of metods and forms of teaching, as well as stressing the importance of experimental work in which the pupils are active, and authentic learning. Some teachers report about the difficulties they had in realizing all the outcomes in the 9th gade. It has been found out that the national chemistry test has strong influence on planing the instruction, especially the practical part which includes the evaluation of experimental work. The findings so far are thus encouraging.
