Abstrakt     Background: A disrupted balance of the nutritional state is a known complication in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Our research aimed to establish the prevalence of malnutrition and overnutrition in patients with JIA in Slovenia. Another objective of the research was to establish whether there are any differences in the nutritional state of patients according to the duration of the disease and healthy controls. Subjects: 72 patients with JIA (39 with disease duration of less than3 years (JIA<3years), 33 with disease duration of more than 3 years (JIA>3 years)), and 54 sex and age-matched controls. Method: The nutritional assessment was determined by measurement of body weight, height and estimation of the body mass index. Results: The percentage of malnourished subjects in the patients with JIA was 5.5% (5% of patients with JIA < 3 years, 6% of patients with JIA > 3 years) and 3.7% in healthy subjects. The percentage of overnourished patients with JIA was 29% (5% of patients with JIA < 3 years, 57% of patients with JIA > 3 years) compared to 17% of healthy subjects (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition among patients with JIA, regardless of the disease duration, is no higher than in healthy subjects. The Slovenian patients with JIA are typically overnourished. This problem often develops after the disease has persisted for at least 3 years from the time of diagnosis. In the first 3 years, we did not observe a higher prevalence of malnourishment or overnourishment than in healthy subjects.
