Abstrakt     The article presents the ethical principle of autonomy as one of health care elements which place a patient in the centre of treatment giving him or her a right to decide for him or herself. Making the right decisions which result in good health and feeling well is possible only if one is well informed about the process of health care and medical treatment. Respecting one's autonomy is the basis for changing a patient from an object into a subject thus playing an active part in the process of health care. Further on, the article presents the results of a research which using a survey of 488 nurses reveals how well the patients are informed about the processes of health care and what a nurse can do if a patient denies a medieal treatment. According to results, the majority of nurses believe that patients are well informed about rhe proeesses of health care. Only faculty-educated nurses think that the opposite is true. Most nurses are ready to negotiate with the patients in case he or she denies health care persuading him to accept it.
