Abstrakt		External fixation has come long way since Malgaigne's first description in 1853. Authors describe the history basis of most popular frames used today. The Hoffmann external fixator, AO tubular fixator, Dynamic axial fixator, Ilizarov external fixator were given special attention. External skeletal fixation has gained popularity in last 20 years. A move from complex three-dimensional frames to unilateral devices has been evident in recent publications. Based on the advantages of external fixation which does not disturb bone vascularity and that the risk of infection is low the indications have broadened in last years. The most common indications are described in the present paper. At the Department of Traumatology General and Teaching Hospital Celje the fixator was used 1326 times in the time period from 1973 to 2000.
