Abstrakt     After the enforcement of the Association Agreements the Republic of Slovenia (1) became an associated member of the European Union on 1 February 1999. By the day Slovenia becomes a full member it will have to harmonise its legislation with the acquis, carry out many structural reforms and ensure the capacity of the institutions to carry out the obligations, deriving from the adoption of the acquis. Ensuring a high level of health care and improving public health by implementation of the programmes for disease prevention and health promotion must be considered in all political decisions in various fields. People attach great priority to their health and expect from the state to provide measures, which will protect their health to the greatest possible extent. Slovenia also meets an enormous challenge, how to develop and carry out coherent and effective policy of health protection in various fields.
