Abstrakt     It is well known that driving in our circumstances is dangerous. Drivers driving under effect of alcohol worsen the situation drastically. It is an imperative that a radical change is made regarding the attitude of either the drivers themselves or anybody participating in the road traffic towards drinking drivers. Changing this attitude is by all means closely connected with changing our general attitude to alcohol drinking. In compliance with the currently applicable Slovenian legislation drivers amateurs are allowed to have 0.5g/kg of alcohol in their blood. It is this apparently low value that leads people astray. In Slovenia, driving under effect of alcohol is one of the most important risk factors for injuries or death on roads. Materials add methods. On May 1, 1998 Slovenia empowered a new law on safety in the road traffic. Provisions of this law that address driving under effect of alcohol are given in section 8 under the heading "Psychophysical state of participants in the road traffic and traffic accidents" (from 116 to 121). In this work we investigated drinking drivers causing traffic accidents or injuries a year prior to and a year after the enforcement of the new law. In drinking drivers responsible for traffic accidents or injuries, we paid due regard to hourly and age intervals, location, kind and sex of the participant in the road traffic. By using the retrospective method we wished to establish what is the influence of preventive elements of the new law with regard to the participation of drinking drivers responsible for traffic accidents and injuries. Results. The result of the newly enforced law is a reduced number of accidents and injuries due to alcohol as a secondary cause, whereas the structure concerning the sex, age and kind of the participant in the road traffic, hourly interval and location has not undergone any characteristic change.
