Abstrakt		Statistics about the leading causes of collisions and the resulting damage to cars and injuries to people only rarely point to defects and malfunctions of vehicles involved in road accidents. Only 1% to 2% of accidents are attribufed to defective car, and an additional 5% to poor condition of the vehicle and risky driver behaviour. However, the continuously reappearing issue is whether certain models of vehicles are safer than others, and which car characteristics are correlated with accident sevedty. Car drivers and passengers constitute more than one half of all traffic casualties, therefore this paper deals only with the driver/vehicle relationship. Many researchers maintain that car mass is crucial to the driver's and passengers' safety, and stress that the greater the car mass the safer the ride. The reality is, however, that the same car models are involved in accidents of different severity and with different consequences because people driving them differ in age, gender, life-style, purpose of driving, and in some other characteristics.
Izvleček		V statistiki o ključnih dejavnikih za nastanek trka in poškodb na vozilih ali poškodb ljudi le redko najdemo naštete napake ali okvare na vozilu. Le 1-2% nesreč nastane zaradi napake na vozilu, do 5% pa zaradi slabega stanja vozila ob neustreznem ravnanju voznika. Kljub temu pa se vedno znova postavljajo vprašanja, koliko posamezni modeli vozil vplivajo na težo prometnih nesreč. Več kot polovica vseh mrtvih zaradi posledic trkov v cestnem prometu je med vozniki in potniki v osebnih avtomobilih, zato prispevek obravnava le odnose med voznikom in osebnim avtomobilom. Vrsta raziskovalcev je odkrila, da je za vamost voznika in potnikov v avtu pomembna masa vozila. Čim večja je masa, tem večja je vamost potujočih v avtu. A kljub temu so isti modeli vozil v rokah voznikov, ki se razlikujejo glede na starost, spol, življenjski slog, namen vožnje, različno udeleženi v trkih in z različnimi posledicami.
