Abstrakt | During a period of four days after uninephrectomy, rats were fed different amounts of standard laboratory food (19 per cent protein), a high protein diet (dietary food "Valikal" with 51 per cent protein or pure casein pellets with 77 per cent protein) or a diet without protein (12 per cent glucose solution). The results showed that in rats fed standard laboratory food the body mass change depended on their total energy intake, while in rats on other diets this was not the case. Despite a markedly increased energy intake, rats on "Valikal" diet retained their body mass at about its initial value. However, in rats offered only glucose or protein, a severe reduction in body mass was observed, regardless of their total energy intake. Increase in the remnant kidney mass (compensatory kidney growth) was in all experimental groups strongly affected by the total protein-nitrogen intake. A positive linear correlation was obtained between log N-intake and the extent of compensatory kidney growth | |
