Abstrakt     Body protection compound (BPC), a new gastric juice peptide, was found (Sikiric et al.: Exp Clin Gastroenterol 1991). This compound prevents the development of different types of tissue injury, however its mechanism is yet unknown. For evaluation of some suggested mechanisms, the effect of BPC was tested in and acid-dependent and non acid-dependent gastric ulcer model in rats. The observations were carried out in Sprague-Dawley (CFY) strain (LATI, Sodollo, Hungary) rats. The gastric mucosal damage was produced by intragastric administration of ethanol (ETOH) (96 per cent, 1 ml) or HCl (0.6 M, 1 ml). The animals were sacrificed at 5 or 60 min after administration of necrotizing agents, when the number and severity of gastric mucosal injury was noted. The body protecting compund (BPC) was intragastrically given - in doses of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 microgrammes/kg - at 60 or 30 min before ETOH or HCl administration. It has been found that: 1. BPC decreased dose-dependently the development of gastric mucosal damage (both number and severity) in ETOH- and HCl-model; 2. no difference was obtained between the extents of gastric mucosal preventive effects of BPC, when it was given at 60 or 30 min before the necrotizing agents; 3. BPC was able to decrease only the severity of gastric mucosal damage, but no effect was obtained in the number of mucosal lesions. It has been concluded that: 1. The BPC has gastric mucosal preventing effect both in acid-dependent and non acid-dependent gastric ulcer model, 2. The changes in early vascular permeability and/or gastric mucosal biochemistry are probably involved in the BPC-induced gastric mucosal protection; 3. BPC is an acid (0.6 M) and ethanol (96 per cent) resistent peptide
