Abstrakt		The thoracic muscle (pars thoracica) of the five Japanese bengaleses (Lonchura domestica) kept in an aviary and fed the usual grain mixture was investigated. The muscle samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen, cut in the cryostat in 8 micrometers thick slices, and submitted to procedures for the presentation of the activity of lactic and succinic dehydrogenases and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorases. Part of the slices were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The hematoxylin and eosin stained slices show a uniform structure of this part of the thoracic muscle composed of small-diameter fibers. All fibers displayed a strong activity of the oxidative enzymes examined, justifying their being defined as slow-contracting oxidative or red fibers. The enzymatic activity proved more intense in the subsarcolemmic part of the fibers
