Abstrakt		Although this century is often referred to as the era of communication and in spite ofthe tremendous technological development in this field. the simple, human, direct interpersonal communication has not lost its meaning. One ofthe fields which - no doubt - demands the intimacy of an interpersonal encounter, is the communication between a patient and his physican. This type of consultation becomes paxticularly difficult during complex situations, such as breaking bad news, dealing with a family whose member became a chronical patient, communicating with media etc. The non-verbal communication is often overlooked, although it contains important messages. This article brings a short overview of some of the critical situations which frequently occur in general practice. Each patient should be treated according to personal needs, but there are some common points and guidelines that make communiciation easier. Adequate training, continuous medical education and personal experience. should help doctors in acquiring the skills and knowledge to deal with difficult and critical situations in their everyday practice. The ethical and legal aspects of a communication failure can be disastrous.
