Abstrakt     Cerebrovascular diseases are the most frequent neurological diseases in adults. Due to their wide-spread occurrence, high mortality rate and the resulting disability they represent a major medical and social problem. Extensive population studies carried out in recent years have provided clear evidence of a heightened risk factors-related threat of cerebrovascular diseases, while also indicating measures and treatment for the prevention of the occurrence and recurrence of cerebrovascular events. Detection and threat assessment constitute a basis for prevention, diagnostics and treatment. Guidelines proceeding from the current knowledge of the matter include recommendations for a maximally efficient treatment of individuals. The guidelines, prepared separately for Europe and the USA, are to serve as a basis of national guidelines. While being the least expensive measure, a healthy way of life goes hand in hand with a high degree of awareness and properly planned and guided prevention from birth to death. Contrary to the developed countries where the results of such activities are already becoming obvious, our country may not witness them sooner than in ten years. General medicamentous therapy is too expensive so it is used only where its benefit is maximal. The present paper deals with guidelines of primary and secondary prevention of cerebrovascular diseases.
