Abstrakt     Individual's ability to adapt to a new disease-related situation differs from one case to another. In the process of rehabilitation involving patients after cerebrovascular insult it is important to take a complex approach. This is ensured via a team com prised of a number of specialized professionals. Social worker is a permanent member of such a team. An outstanding characteristic of social work is its being performed in unpredicted and unpredictable circumstances. While it is not possible to determine procedures as such, their course can to some extent be anticipated. Social work means providing professional help to people in distress or in a crisis. Social problems have an unfavourable effect upon the course of rehabilitation, the patient's collaboration is less efficient due to the preoccupation with objective and subjective problems of the patient and his family. Social worker's professional aid has to be focused upon the work with the patient, not for him or instead of him. It is essential to ensure the cooperation of family members with regard to the type and complexity of problems as well as opportunities to re-integrate the patient into his narrower and broader social environment.
