Abstrakt     Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is electrical stimulation of muscles with reduced or lost voluntary nervous control, aiming at eliciting mucle contractions to obtain efficient and reasonable movements. It is applicable to lesions of the central motoneurones, including also post-stroke patients. We mostly use systems for trans cutaneous FES via surface eletrodes and much less FES implant systems. Patients suffering from spastic hemiparesis are usually subject to single-channel FES. In clinical practice, under strict observation of contraindications and safety measures, FES is quite frequently used as a form of physical therapy in addition to numerous other therapeutic methods. FES appliances are prescribed for home use in special cases where fine effects have been achieved in a highly motivated patient to whom the FES system may serve as an orthotic device.
