Abstrakt     Policy makers are becoming aware of the need to improve opportunities for employ ing people with disabilities and sustain their employability. On the way to job placement there is a range of barriers: individual's ability as outcome of treatment and rehabilitation, his/her biological and social characteristics, obstacles in physical environment, the attitudes of employers or limitations inposed by the society itself. There is no universal model, but the bio - psycho - social model could recognise such a divercity of problems. Return to work /school and beeing employed is becoming an important indicator of successfull outcome of treatment and rehabilitaion of all chronically ill persons. Among stroke survivors it concerns a smoller part of population. Studies have found that the percentage of patients returning to work ranged from 3 to 84 percents. Studies also varies in resulting predictors of return to work but among them should be stressed: the patient's age, education and occupation, alcohol consuming prior to stroke, early rehabilitation, the level of muscle weakness, mobility and Barthel index, aphasia and apraxia, mental disorders. The definition of fitness for work is given, the framework for its assessment on the level of patient's abilities and requirements of work place, aims of matching those properties are given. Though the common model for return to work is of interest, the individual plan of return to work for each stroke patient is of importance. For this plan the following issues should be taken in to account: disablement (expressed as reduction in activities and parchological and mental level following stroke, the endurance and driving capability are stressed, overall health condition, issues about education, work, family and social situation should not be neglected.
