Abstrakt     Bacterial infection of the fetus most commonly follows preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM). It is extremely difficult to predict in which of pregnant women with pPROM infection will develop and clinical signs are not always helpful. Leukocyte counts, CRP in maternal blood, nonreactive or suspicious (tachycardia) cardiotocogram or absent fetal breathing and movements have acceptable predictive value for diagnosing fetal infection. CRP in amniotic and vaginal fluid, cytokine determinations as well as determinations of other mediators of inflammation in maternal blood, amniotic fluid and vaginal fluid, however, still demand further research.
