Abstrakt     Background. Operative obstetrics is a well-known risk factor for infective complications. According to the literature data prophylactic antibiotics might decrease infective complications. Routine use of antibiotics might be reasonable if infectious complications after an operation are higher than 10 %. Methods. We searched the literature. We analysed medical documentation of women who delivered in Slovenia in the triennium from 1997 to 1999. The data were collected from National Perinatal Informational System of Slovenia (NPIS). We analysed infectious complications in women after cesarean sections in Porodnišnica Ljubljana in the first half of the year 2000. We collected the data from delivery records and hospital documentation. Results. In the triennium 52990 women delivered in Slovenia. In 1559 (2,9%) of them delivery was accomplished by vacuum or forceps. Cesarean section was performed in S 159 (9,7%) women: in 3424 (6,4%) cesarean section was urgent and in 1735 (3,3%) it was elective. Infectious complications in puerperium most often occur in the population of parturients with the urgent cesarean section, followed by those with the elective cesarean section, those who had operatively accomplished vaginal delivery, vaginal breech delivery and vaginal delivery in occiput presentation. In none of these groups infective complications surpassed 10 %. In none of these groups statistically significant connection with antibiotic use and infectious complications was found. Conclusions. Infectious complications after operatively accomplished vaginaly delivery and after cesarean sections in Slovenia are rare. Routine use of antibiotics therefore is not necessary.
