Abstrakt     Health and safety at work has had a long tradition in Slovenia. Between 1965 and 1990 it was based on relatively efficient occupational dispensaries located in health centers and occupational health services located in factories. In both, specialists of occupational medicine, occupational health nurses and psychologists were employed. They co-operated with safety engineers and the company's management. The idea of occupational health dispensaries and occupational health services was very similar to that of thc occupational health and safety services, which were recommended hy the ILO convention 161. The deficiency in the old system was mostly strict division between occupational health (called occupational medicine) and occupational (technical) safety. The socio-political and economic transition after 1991 has brought about the changes in the activities regarding occupational health and safety. Occupational health services were closed down, firms dismissed safety engineers, employers reduced the founds for occupational health and safety. Occupational medicine was treated as socialistic medieine. In 1999 the Act on Occupational Safety and Health was passed. The basic demands prescribed by the Act arc: harmonization of Slovenian legislation with EU directives, the institution building, functional support, mostly to education, research and inspection supervision, financial support, which is primarily reflected in the establishing of occupational health and safety insurance, and finally the need for the data on occupational injuries and occupational diseases.
