Abstrakt     Ketamine is a parenteral anestetic agent that produces dissociative anesthesia. At sub-anesthetic dosesit provides analgesic activity. Effects of this drug are mediated by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and other receptors. Due to its high lipid solubility and low protein binding, ketamine is extensively distributed in the body. Ketamine metabolism is mediated by hepatic microsomal enzymes. Ketamine increases cerebral metabolizem and cerebral blood flow. It has minimal efects on central respiratory drive and is a bronchial smooth muscle relaxant. Ketamin stimulates cardiovascular system. During awakening from ketamin anesthesia it produces undesirable psychologic reactions. Benzodiazepins effectively attenuate and treat this ketamine reactions. Ketamine is used as anesthetic and analgesic agent in emergency medicine, anesthesia, intensive care units and for treatment of chronic pain.
