Abstrakt     Health and safety at work has had a long tradition in Slovenia. Between 1965 and 1990 it was based on relatively efficient occupational surgeries located in health centres and occupational health services located in factories. The idea of occupational health surgeries and occupational health services was very similar to that of the occupational health and safety services, which were recommended by the ILO convention 161. The deficiency in the old system was mostly a strict division between occupational health (called occupational medicine) and occupational (technical) safety, poor cooperation of occupational health institutions with the labour inspectorate, poor knowledge of health at work among safety engineers and mostly among labour inspectors, and lack of regulations regarding special insurance for health and safety at work. In 1999, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed. From that time on, all the legal acts referring to safety and health at work have been passed but their implementation in practice is still not satisfactory. Most certainly, the main shortcoming is due to the following facts: Slovenia still does not have special insurance for health and safety at work, doctors who are specialists in occupational medicine and other experts are paid directly by employers, interdisciplinary work for safety and health at work in companies has not been introduced and the system of specific education of safety engineers, inspectors and doctors is not specific enough.
