Abstrakt     Public health practice is not in the exclusive domain of a single type of organisation or profession. In Slovenia the National Institute of Public Health and the regional institutes of public health perform the majority of activities in this field. By adapting to specific needs of local communities, public health institutes became very heterogeneous and have proven remarkably adaptable and responsive to the changes in the environment. Similarly as in almost all Eastern European countries, restructuring of public health services to allow them to respond to the complex challenges in the field of public health in the future is urgently needed in Slovenia. The reorganisation of these institutes is required also to achieve more effective use of available resources and to attain higher quality outputs. The reorganisation should base on two key assumptions. The first one is that the essential public health functions should be ensured by the state. This means that the appropriate national organisational infrastructure of the public health institutes and sufficient and sustainable financing should be ensured. The second one is that all activities where the free market competition is involved would be organised more effectively in companies. Thus, the main objective of the reorganisation of the IPHs in Slovenia should be the partition of the public heatth and other activities.
