Abstrakt     Background. Over the past 20 years, the accuracy of conventional blood pressure measurement has been questioned and efforts have been made to improve the technique with automated devices. Accurate blood pressure measurement is the basis for the diagnosis, management, therapy, epidemiology and research in hypertension in children and adults. Hypertension is undoubtedly an important cardiovascular risk factor and its prevention and treatment should begin in childhood. Conclusions. The general principles of blood pressure measurement (selection of an accurate device, variability of blood pressure, white-coat hypertension, procedure of blood pressure measurement etc.) are described in this article, as well as conventional sphygmanometry (mercury, aneroid and automated manometers and self- and ambulatory blood pressure measurement. Finally, normal and pathological valuesof blood pressure in children and adolescents are defined.
