Abstrakt     In microorganisms metabolic functions are regulated by nutrient availability. The majority of these organisms preferentially utilise glucose as a carbon and energry source when the genes involved in the metabolism of alternative carbon sources are repressed. These genes are upregulated in the absence of glucose and in the presence of an alternative carbon source. In the preliminary studies, a cDNA and the corresponding gene encoding a putative sugar epimerase were isofated from the filamentous fungus Rhizopus nigricans, belonging to the phylum Zygomycota. The increased level of the corresponding mRNA was determined in the presence of steroids, such as progesterone, testosterone in deoxycorticosterone, as well as during fungal growth in the medium lacking carbon sources, while the corresponding mRNA was not detected in the presence of glucose.
