Abstrakt | Background. Splenomegaly is not a disease, it is a sign of blood and other diseases, often accompanied by hypersplenism. splenectomy Spleen is filtering blood, it has an immune function, it serves as a reservoir for blood cells and it has a role in iron metabolism. In certain pathologic states spleen has a hematopoetic function. Considering the mechanism for splenic enlargement, the causes can be divided in four cathegories: red blood cell destruction and immune response work hypertrophy, infiltrative, venous outflow obstruction, combination of reasons. Indications for splenectomy are hereditary and immune anemias, immune and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, Hodgkin's disease, malignant and benign tumors of the spleen. Conclusions. Splenectomy is an accepted treatement, which brings improval and may prolong disease-free interval. In uncurable diseases one must outweight the benefit and potential risks of splenectomy. | |
