Abstrakt     Although prosthetic hip infections are rare (-2%), they represent the most serious complication after prosthesis implantation. During the periad of nine years, 23 patients with prosthetic hip infection were treated at the Department of Intectious Diseases in Ljubljana. Out of 23 patients 17 (73.9 %) were females and 6 (26.1%) males, median age 69 years. Etiological agent was identified in 16 (69.6%) patients by the isolation from blood culture and/or diagnostic aspiration. The most common etiological agent of prosthetic hip infections is Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The majority of patients had fever and pain at the site of inserted prosthesis, and laboratory parameters, such as elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocytosis and elevated concentration of C-reactive protein. The early postoperative infection was found in only one patient, but in the others, infection occurred from nine months to 19 years, median nine years. The treatment of prosthetic hip infectian is extremely difficult and there are no uniform recommendations. Despite intensive antimicrobial treatment, 17 (73.9%) patients required prosthetic hip removal.
