Abstrakt | Successful treatment of fungal infections of the skin requires a correct diagnosis, the choice of a suitable antimycotic and the proper time of treatment. The decisžon regarding local or systemic treatment depends on the clinical picture, the type of causative agent and the immune response of the organism. As a rule, acute, uncomplicated and superficial cutaneous infections due to dermatophytes and yeasts are treated mith local antimycotics only. Newer systemic antimycodcs have improved the possibility of treating chronic and deep infections of skin and nails. Nevertheless, some infections - particularly those of the scalp and the nails - remain a therapeutic problem, either on account of the resistance of the fungi to the antimycotic or due to the more difficult permeation of the drug to the site of infection. During the treatment process our attention should also be focused on associated risk factors, which make the infection harder to treat or the cure is quickly followed by a recurrence. The possibility of side effects should be taken into consideration, and - particularly in the elderly - also interactions mith other medications. | |
