Abstrakt     Background: Heroin addiction represents an important social problem, which implies medical, social, economical, legal and other consequences. In West European countries, where the problem of illicit drug has already been present in the past, the population of addicts is becoming older. The opposite is true in East European countries, where the addicts are very young. Therefore it is necessary to choose an effective instrument to monitor addiction, which at the same time also permits us to evaluate sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of heroin addicted persons. Aim: The aim of the study is to find an effective instrument and with its help to find out and to monitor the use and the consequences of use of different psychoactive substances (PAS) selfadministered by heroin addicts. Hypothesis: The group of addicts from Slovenia is statistically significantly different from the Italian group, regarding the use and consequences of use of different PAS. Methods: In a cross-sectional study were in the period of years 2001-2004 interviewed with AbSo-questionnaire 1203 randomly chosen heroin addicts, who sought medical help in Centre for Prevention and Treatment of Illegal Drug Dependence in Izola, Koper and in Pisa (Italy). The data were analyzed by SPSS program. Results: Heroin addicts are population, which lives in problematic social situation: they have difficulties with education or employment, problematic relationship with partner and parents and problems with the law. Addiction is, especially for Slovenian addicts, at the same time also the consequence of problematic social relations and relationship in family. Slovenian addicts use more psychoactive substances than Italian addicts, who present significantly more mental symptoms and physical consequences. (Abstract truncated at 2000 charactes).
