Abstrakt     In Slovenia the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative started in 1998. The aims of the study were to collect and analyse data for the in hospital breast-feeding rates, and to evaluate the influence of BFHI on initiation rate of breast-feeding in last ten years, for 184.560 live born infants. The preliminary data from the self-assessment questionnaires for the years 1998/1999 show an average the "Ten steps" accomplishment of 77%. From 1998 to 2002 ten out of all 14 maternity hospitals were awarded a Baby-Friendly Hospital status and in 2002 84% of all new-borns were born in Baby-Friendly Hospitals. By the year 2004 ten Baby-Friendly Hospitals were successfully reassessed. In observed ten years period ever breast-feeding rate in early postpartum days averaged at 96,8%. Although it was already high in 1993, ever breast-feeding rate have been steadily increasing. The main increase occurred in partially breast-feed new-borns.
