Abstrakt     Background. Stroke is among the most common neurological disorders. In Slovenia it affects over 4000 people yearly. The maj ority of stroke survivors remain permanently impaired and dependent on others. Rehabilitation programmes are usually restricted to the first few months after stroke and do not meet all the patients' needs. In attempting to restore their everyday lives patients are continually faced with new emerging problems and require emotional as well as social support. Aim. Community stroke clubs are a means of long-term support for stroke survivors. In our study we attempted so determine whether stroke clubs have an objective influence on quality of life (QOL) of their members. As yet there has been no study publihed on this topic. In addition we aimed to assess the QOL of a sample of long-term stroke survivors. Hypothesis. QOL of stroke clubs members is better than the QOL of stroke survivors who are not active in stroke clubs. QOL of stroke survivors is diminshed compared to the general population. Methods. Thirteen members of stroke clubs and their paired control patients plus 14 members of stroke clubs for whom control patients could not be found (n=40) were included in this observational study. All participants were intreviewed at their home. QOL was assessed with Extended Barthel Index (EBI), EQ-SD questionnaire and questions about social life and secondary prevention measures. Stroke club members were compared with their paired control patients. In the second part of the statistical anaysis we compared the results of our sample with data on the general slovenian population. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
