Abstrakt     Complete spinal cord lesions result in a loss of motor and sensory functions conducted via afferent and efferent spinal pathways and also in an interruption of pathways from the brain to the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. This results in patological changes of sympathetic innervation depending on autonomic organization of the pathway in the spinal cord. For these reasons, spinal cord injury leads to the cardiovascular and metabolic alterations at rest and during exercise. Recent research studies have found that people with spinal cord injury have an increased risk of devoloping coronary heart disease at an earlier age than in the nondisabled population. Insulin resistance results in multiple metabolic and blood pressure abnormalities that can increase the risk of devoloping the atherosclerotic heart and vessles diseases. People with spinal cord injury must use appropriate prevention strategies to reduce the risk of devoloping cardiovascular disease.
