Abstrakt     The Laboratory of Gynecologic Cytology was founded at General Hospital Maribor in 1955. Primarius Franc Rostaher, M.D. and Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, was the first to introduce colposcopic examination and cytologic examination of cervical smears for malignancy according to Papanicolaou in Maribor. Beside him, two further Specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Asst. Prof. Alemka Saks, M.D., Ph.D. and Stane Urbančič, M.D., also took and analyzed cervical smears. In 1961 Primarius Nada Dolenc, M.D., started to examine cervical smears at what was then the Infertility OPD. She carried out this work until her retirement in 1991. In August of 1955 the staining of cytologic smears was taken over by Laboratory Technical Marija Cehner-Abram who carried out this work until 1961 after that she performed the duties of screener until 1982. In 1955, 300 cervical smears were examined at the Laboratory. The number of examined cervical smears increased gradually; in 1960 the laboratory staff examined 2,537 smears, in 1965 they examined 19,971 smears, in 1970 19, 420 and in 1975 as many as 24, 433 cervical smears. In 1976 the Laboratory employed Sonja Novak, Prof. Biol., as cytologist, in 1981 Iva Brvar-Plaznik, Lab. Technican and Božena Rodeš, Grad. Nurse. In 1980, 28,640 cervical smears were examined. In December of 1981, Tatjana Kodrič, M.D., Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, started to work at the Laboratory as cytologist. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
