Abstrakt     Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic disease which frequently affects the elderly and is associated with relapses. Symptom evaluation is of key importance, as it is the most cost-effective and sensitive method for diagnosis of the disease and for adjustment of the rapy for individual patient. Endoscopy is an important adjunct to symptom assessment. Different drugs, having miscellaneous modes of action, are used in the therapy of reflux disease. Only the proton pump inhibitors are highly effective with all grades of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Additional factors having an important role in the treatment of this disease are dietary measures and change of lifestyle. Frequent relapses of the disease necessitate long-term maintenance treatment. If medical therapy fails, laparoscopic antireflux surgery should be considered. All current therapies have shortcomings. Management strategies should identify the most effective treatment that gives adequate relief of symptoms and so corrects any symptom-related impairment of quality of life.
