Abstrakt     Osteoporosis is a very common bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density that increases bone susceptibility to fracture. The family physician as the physician of first contact has the unique opportunity to identify and manage this disease. In the article the author describes three cases from her own medical practice: a female patient with postmenopausal osteoporosis without and one with bone fracture and another with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Risk factors associated with osteoporosis, which are important for bone mineral density measurement, are elucidated. Optimal methods for diagnosing osteoporosis are presented, with particular stress on dual-energy Xray absorptiometry and its correct interpretation. Bone health and several elements of osteoporosis prevention are listed: consultation with the patient, calcium and vitamin D intake, exercise, risk factors for fractures and fall prevention.
