Abstrakt | Periampullary carcinomas are rare and constitute a special entity having a better prognosis than other duodenal tumors. The term periampullary carcinoma is not a well-defined pathological entity. Diagnosis is often late in being confirmed because of the non-specific symptoms, consequently leading to poor prognosis. The factors that affect management and survival of patients with this disease remain controversial. Survival of patients with adenocarcinoma of the duodenum depends on the possibility of periorming a complete resection Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (Ca19-9) has been used as a serum tumor marker for adenocarcinoma of the upper gastrointestinal tract, particularly primary adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. This tumor marker has also been used to differentiate benign from malignant diseases of the pancreas but elevations of Ca19-9 in the absence of pancreatic malignancy have also been reported. We are presenting a patient with periampullary carcinoma first detected with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), which is not a common condition, and a patient with marked elevation of Ca19-9 due to an infectious process caused by a pancreatic mass suggestive of malignancy and treated with endoscopic papillotomy (EPT) and stenting. | |
