Abstrakt		Clinical evaluation and classification of injury severity of patients suffering from severe head injury are essential for an effective treatment and rehabilitation. Injury severity is determined by the magnitude and the direction of the traumatizing and acceleration forces and the localization of the lesions. The subdivision of the midbrain syndrome in four separate stages and of bulbar brain syndrom in two stages is a valid and useful method to describe patient's level of cerebral dysfunction. The diagnosis of midbrain syndrom 1 and ll usually allows a favourable prognosis. In the stages III and IV also inf Zuences of other factors have to be considered in defining the patient's outcome.
