Abstrakt     Severe traumatic brain injury instantly stops and changes the course of life of the patients and their relatives. Prompt professional medical assistance helps the patient to survive and prevents many possible complications. The number of survivors with severe injuries has grown but the injuries often lead to numerous and limiting consequences. There has been a growing, and even more so dramatically, gap between the level of health care services which keep the injured alive and the network of rehabilitation programs which would enable the patients to reach the expected quality of life. Programs of rehabilitation prevent the chronicity of problems, the development of disturbing patterns of behavior and consequently any possible problems in recovery. Thus, the patient is enabled to reach a higher level of recovery of impaired abilities, to compensate for the lost abilities by means technical aids or compensatory patterns of behavior and reach the highest possible integration into the environment. Recovery is a long and unsteady process promoted by some and impeded or even stopped by other factors. Premature inclusion into demanding activities can be as dangerous as passivity. When recovery is supported by adequate comprehensive rehabilitation programs, it can take longer and reach a higher level. The programs of psychosocial rehabilitation help the patients to understand and grasp their condition and to recognize the consequences, they encourage them to look for their own strength, to develop suitable behavior patterns which can lead to a better participation in daily life, they enable the patietnts and their relatives to transform interpersonal relationship etc. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
