Abstrakt | Assisting people with traumatic brain injury to engage in work or other productive activities is a major challenge confronting the vocational rehabilitation system. From the vocational rehabilitation perspective, brain injuries represent a very demanding area, because the impact of TBI has wide-ranging affects and consequences, which can affect all areas of in dividual functioning. Their impacts affect physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural capacities, and loss of function in a combination of these areas is not uncommon. These deficits are often displayed as person with TBI attempt to return to work, as they are likely to encounter environmental and attitudinal barriers, limited vocational assistance, and social separation. The fact is that the employment status is determined by both the individual residual deficits and environmental factors. As a result of these multifaceted challenges, the rates of successful return to employment are low. The needs of persons with TBI are likely to vary tremendously, therefore we can not talk about a "typical" individual after a head injury and a general prognostic factors for returning to work. Moreover, a person who has suffered a relatively minor head injury with a brief period of unconsciousness or none at all, may exhibit explicit difficulties in returning to work, whereas a person with a moderate to severe brain injury may make an adequate adjustment and return to employment, depending on the type of injury, time since injury and many other factors. In contrary with many other disabilities, in the area of vocational rehabilitation of persons after a brain injury, it is almost impossible to get a general picture of probable rehabilitation needs and potentials from a disability diagnosis. Each individual request a custom-made rehabilitation plan which specifically addresses that person's needs. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters). | |
