Abstrakt     Surveillance data on reported cases are critical to implement control measures and to determine whether the program is having an impact. Surveillance data clearly show that incidence of vaccine preventable diseases decreased. The incidence is still high and outbreak occur when coverage is not high enough for herd immunity. Disease outbreaks in a vaccinated population can raise doubts as to the efficacy of the vaccine and the vaccination program. Such outbreaks may result from accumulation of susceptible persons from lack of vaccination, primary vaccine failures and/or secondary vaccine failures. Physician diagnosis is usually not laboratory confirmed before notification. Strengthening collaboration between laboratory and epidemiology practice is seen as a crucial component. The Communicable Diseases Centre at NIPH strengthened epidemiologic and laboratory capacity with the intention to identify and monitor the occurrence of infectious diseases of public health importance in a community, characterize disease determinants, identify and respond to disease outbreaks, use public health data for priority setting and policy development, and assess the effectiveness of activities. The program includes free of charge assess of laboratory confirmation of vaccine preventable diseases, acute respiratory infections, including infuenza and invasive diseases.
