Abstrakt		Infectious deseases in children are very frequent. Due to mild clinical signs most of infections can be managed on an outpatient basis. Children with serious infections are hospitalized. At the Department for Infectious Diseases of Teaching Hospital Maribor, we treated 4920 children in the years 2000-2004. 1855 children were hospitalized and 3065 children we treated on an outpatient basis. Gastrointestinal tract infections were the main cause of children's hospitalization due to dehidration and severe course of the illness. The second most frequent infections were respiratory tract infections following by cutaneous infections, central nervous system infections, urinary infections and fever of unknown origin. Pediatricians were involved in treatment of children hospitalized at the Department of Infectious Diseases. Special attention has to be paid to children's caregiving and infection control measures.
