Abstrakt | Human herpesviruses are enveloped DNA viruses. Eight different human herpesviruses are known and they are divided in three subfamilies. All members of herpesvirus family are able to establish latent infection with occasional reactivation. Human herpesviruses are mainly transmitted through close contacts. Tronsmission is possible also from mother to child. Infections with human herpesviruses can present in wide range of clinical syndromes. In immunocompetent patients majoriy of infections are mild and need no specific antiviral treatment. On the other side in immunocompromised patients some herpesviruses can lead to heavy infections, possibly with lethal outcome. Infants can acquire human herpesviruses in utero, peripartum, or postnataly. Different clinical syndromes may occur varying from asymptomatic infections to severe infections with high mortality and long term consequences. Improvement in diagnostlcs of congenital and perinatal infections is necessary. More controlled clinical trials are also needed for recommendations for safe and efficacious use of antiviral agents in this group of patients. | |
