Abstrakt     It is estimated that almost half of all antimicrobial use is inappropriate. The consequences of antimicrobial overuse and missuse include risk of adverse effects, higher cost and higher rate of antimicrobial resistance. In outpatients in Slovenia antimicrobials are prescribed most commonly for children 0-4 years of age and in all age groups penicillins are most frequently prescribed. The prescription rate for antimicrobials in our country is higher than in Scandinavian countries, but the prescription pattern is similar. There is limited data on hospital antimicrobial consumption in children. The antimicrobial consumption at the University Medical Center has been monitored since 1998. Compared to adult patients antibiotic consumption is lower in pediatric departments. Although among pediatric departments there are significant differences in consumption and the pattern of prescription. Reliable data on antimicrobial consumption and resistance should form a basls for antibiotic policy devised to reduce inappropriate use of antimicrobials and emergence of resistance.
