Abstrakt     It is vital to follow and monitor the use of antibiotics in children in and outside the hospital with the aim of decreasing the prescription of antibiotics that are unsuitable or even unnecessary. To achieve this aim we must follow the sensitivity of microorganisms to individual antibiotics as well as the occurrence and increase of the resistance to individual antibiotics. The accessibiliy and the application of modern diagnostic methods will eventually dispense with the use of antibiotics in certain cases. To make the comparison of the use of antibiotics in Slovene children with those in the rest of Europe easier, uniform criteria should be applied. Reviewing the use of antibiotics in children at Maribor Teaching Hospital between 2002 and 2004, we found that the greatest consumption - expressed in the daily dosage per 100 hospital beds - was at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, followed by the Deportment of Pediatrics, but it was minimal at the Neonatology Unit. The antibiotics most frequently prescribed were penicillins.
