Abstrakt     The current term arteriovenous fistula encompasses all forms of pathologic communications between arteries and veins with flow through the shunt entirely free from any known physiologic regulatory control. On a basic level arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) may be classified into acquired and congenital forms. Acquired AVF may be further divided into artificial and pathological forms. From an etiological point of view the greatest practical importance must be attached to the acquired AVE Traumatic fistulas assume a dominant place particularly in wartime. Artificial, iatrogenic and disease induced AVF are more often seen in daily practice. Congenital AVF may be classified according to so called binary classification. Congenital forms have gained clinical importance in recent years due to improved methods of vascular diagnosis and better understanding of their development. In the presented paper the author discusses basic etiologic, pathogenetic and diagnostic problems of AVF.
