Abstrakt     The highest incidence and prevalence of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis have been found in Scandinavia, Great Britain and North America. The incidence of Crohn's disease in various parts of Europe ranges from 0.7 to 9.8 newly diagnosed patients / 100,000 inhabitants anually, and that of ulcerative colitis 1.5-20.3/100,000 inhabitants annually. In North America the incidence of rohn's disease is 3.1-14.6/ 100,000 inhabitants annually, that of ulcerative colitis 2.2-14.3/100, 000 inhabitants annually. The principle of falling gradient from north to south is valid, as it is also from west to east in Europe. The incidence is relatively stable in countries with a high revalence of CIBD, but is rapidly increasing in countries with a low incidence. The differences in prevalence with regard to race and ethnicity are decreasing. The incidence of Crohn's disease in childhood is higher than that of ulcerative colitis in most countries, although the latter is more frequent in very young children. The incidence of ulcerative colitis in children gradually inreased until the end of the 1970's, after which it is aid to be relatively stable at 1.5-4/100,000 children annually in countries with a high incidence. The incience of Crohn's disease however rose in the 1980's nd 1990's to 2.1-4.9 new cases/100,000 children annually and is probably still increasing.
