Abstrakt     Post-operative pain relief in children was often underestimated until recent advances in developmental neurophysiology and clinical pharmacology. Our proposed »multimodal« post-operative pain relief depends upon the concomitant use of different analgesics, which should enable an optimal balance between negative side-effects and effective analgesia. This can only be achieved by regular pain assessment and alleviation in children. When using analgesics it is also important to consider the physiological characteristics of children, which can influence the distribution and effect of analgesics. This paper presents the most often used analgesics and their characteristics.
