Abstrakt     At the beginning of the 19th c. alcoholic drinks became increasingly accessible to a wider circle of the population on the geographical territory of present-day Europe, and consequently alcoholism became an important health problem. It was tackled by numerous doctors in France, England, Germany, and the United States of America. Further research will still have to be done to assess how great an influence these doctors and their publications had on the work of Fran Viljem Lipič since, according to the sources thus far known, he was indeed the person who wrote the first scientific study on alcoholism, which he designated as Dipsobiostatika. This is a very extensive clinical study, supported by numerical data, on alcoholics who were living in Ljubljana during the first quarter of the 19th c., and whose doctor was Lipič. His observations and calculations emphasized that alcoholics are more frequently prone to falling ill with various diseases, and that their ueatment is longer lasting and less successful. What seemed particularly disturbing to him was the influence of the parents' alcoholism on the offspring, not only with regard to reduced fertility, but also to the poor state of health of children born to alcoholic parents. Likewise, he was aware that the younger the alcoholic, the more swiftly he or she would reach a high level of alcohol dependence. Through careful observation, he came to the conclusion that alcoholism is manifested in specific patterns, and hence he established the first known classification of alcoholism, which he also used for estimating the risk to the patient's health. He correctly proposed that alcoholism is a disease, the treatment of which he described as difficult; at the same time, he proposed setting up institutions and health-care centers for alcoholics.
