Abstrakt		Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is used to treat patients with advanced hematologic malignancies, solid tumors and nonmalignant conditions, including primary immunodeficiencies, hematologic diseases, and inherited metabolic disorders. Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality and represent the most significant barrier to both immediate and long-term survival after HSCT. Infectious complications after HSCT are somewhat predictable based on the underlying primary disease and the acquired immunodeficiencies that occur after the transplant. These immune defects and the gradual recovery of host defenses allow infections to occur in three predictable periods. Several risk factors place the HSCT recipient at increased risk for infectious complications. The approach to the HSCT patient is based on recognizing the infections that can occur during each of the at-risk periods. Diagnosis, laboratory findings, treatment and measures to prevent infectious complications, including antimicrobial prophylaxis, are described. Infectious complications and mortality of the 28 hematopoietic stem-cell transplant children who had undergone HSCT at the Pediatric clinic in Ljubljana until December 2004 are presented.
