Abstrakt     Approach to unconscious child is presented in our article. We present a possible clinical pathway and a way of thinking which should led us towards an answer why the child has disturbed consciousness, and to establish proper working hypothesis. Such hypothesis ofers us an opportunity to decide appropriately about diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Consciousness can be divided into awakeness and awamess. Awakeness is function of brainstem reticulary activating system or brain stem while awames is function of brain cortex. Every state of disturbed consciousness means disturbed function of central nervus system. The central nervus system is also place of highest control of vital functiones. Therefore each disturbance of consciosness means potentialy life threating condition and calls for emergent action. When approaching the child with disturbed consciousness vital functions have to be checked and the principles of ABC should be provided. The next step is detailed medical history with special attention to the circumstances in which disturbance of consciousness has occured or the child was found. With clinical examination we search for signs of those diseases which are known to cause disturbed consciousness. With focused neurological examination we seek for focal neurological singns, which will help us to localise lesion responsible for disturbance of consciousness into proper region of central nervous system.
