Abstrakt | Fever is a common cause of visit to a pediatric office. The physician is faced with a difficult task of establishing whether the febrile child has a localized or systemic bacterial infection requiring antibiotic treatment or a self limited viral infection, most commonly involving the upper respiratory tract. In a considerable proportion of cases no focus of infection is found. In this heterogenous group of febrile children the majority of infections is caused by viruses that require symptomatic treatment only, however a small proportion of children has serious bacterial infections (occult bacteremia, sepsis, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, meningitis). In order to indentify and appropriately treat these children basic laboratory tests are used. | |
